Why Should My Child Read This Book?
Innocent and imaginative, this book will delight little girls with the simple but universal life Laura and her family lead in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Wilder’s vivid explanations of everyday life on the frontier create a sense of awe for the bounties of nature and a sense of gratefulness for our blessings (food, shelter and family). The description of gathering maple syrup and sugar-making are a celebration of sharing with family and community. The explanation of butchering day teaches us waste is not necessary (the bladder of the animal becomes a balloon for Laura and her sister!). Despite their sparse material belongings, Laura shows us that jealousy is a part of human nature that can be overcome by discipline and love. The clear language is written for a younger audience and makes for an easy and enjoyable read-aloud.
