Little House in the Big Woods

Little House in the Big Woods
Synopsis
Based on the real-life adventures of Laura Ingalls Wilder, Little House in the Big Woods is the first book in the award-winning Little House series. This book takes place in 1871 and introduces us to four-year-old Laura, who lives in a log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Pioneer life isn’t easy for the Ingalls family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. They celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do their spring planting, bring in the harvest in the fall, and make their first trip into town. And every night, safe and warm in their little house, the sound of Pa’s fiddle lulls Laura and her sisters into sleep.

Mindful Muslim Review

Innocent and imaginative, this book will delight little girls with the simple but universal life Laura and her family lead in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Wilder’s vivid explanations of everyday life on the frontier create a sense of awe for the bounties of nature and a sense of gratefulness for our blessings (food, shelter and family). The description of gathering maple syrup and sugar-making are a celebration of sharing with family and community. The explanation of butchering day teaches us waste is not necessary (the bladder of the animal becomes a balloon for Laura and her sister!). Despite their sparse material belongings, Laura shows us that jealousy is a part of human nature that can be overcome by discipline and love. The clear language is written for a younger audience and makes for an easy and enjoyable read-aloud.
