Why Should My Child Read This Book?
“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.
“And so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
This book embodies the concept of tawakkul—putting our trust in Allah ﷻ, and doing what we can in the circumstances He places us in. The first of a classic trilogy, The Fellowship emphasizes the importance of everyday acts of courage and kindness and the importance of moving forward even when all seems hopeless. Frodo, a humble hobbit amid grand elf lords, undertakes responsibility for carrying the ring because he sees that everyone else is afraid of doing so. His friends, Sam, Merry, and Pippin, display incredible loyalty and bravery in joining him although they know they will face grave danger. The members of the Fellowship protect one another and sacrifice for each other. Over the course of their journey, the book highlights the importance of each one of us, no matter how humble, doing what we can to protect what is good and beautiful in the world.
This book is also filled with reverence and respect for the natural world, and a deep appreciation for simple blessings—food, shelter, warmth, and good company.
Mindful Muslim Reader recommends Books 1-3 in this series.
